The North Carolina Department of Revenue announced in Important Notice: Department of Revenue Extends the Time to File Income and Franchise Tax Returns to July 15, 2020 that the North Carolina income and franchise tax return filing due dates have been automatically extended from April 15, 2020, to July 15, 2020. The Department has also issued separate Announcements whereby taxpayers will not be subject to failure to file and failure to pay penalties associated with such returns if such amounts are paid by July 15, 2020. However, interest will be applied on any amounts not paid by April 15, 2020. This relief applies to individual income tax returns, corporate income and franchise tax returns, partnership tax returns, and estate and trust tax returns due April 15, 2020. However, it does not apply to trust taxes such as sales and use taxes or withholding taxes. No special action or filing is required for taxpayers to qualify for this relief and taxpayers who need additional time to file beyond the extended July 15 deadline can request an additional filing extension.
